saved my life

it is judy garland's birthday today.
and if there is anyone who embodies the voice of melancholy, it is her. the thickness and the clarity of that tone.
with hope you burn up...
oh my heart, my heart.
happy birthday.

(and if you want a little more, do go here and let your insides swell and sink and slow dance around all day.)

happy monday, my huckleberry friends.

BODY BREAK!

with the mudder and all, i'm feeling big time physical-fit, and so i thought this would be a good week to think about bodies and how we women are told to use them. we've talked about it before, surely. strength vs size vs function and so on. i don't want to get all repetitive up in here. but! there's a new resource out there in internet-land talking to women about fitness!

"We, the Ms. Fits, believe that living consciously includes being conscious of the world outside of the yoga or Pilates studio and that our wellness also depends on the wellness of the earth and everyone on the earth;  We believe that reproductive rights are human rights, and all girls and women deserve access to healthy food and active play, and that strong women kick ass."
{a bit of the ms. fit manifesto}

I haven't gotten through a tonne of ms. fit magazine's content yet, but i'm excited about what i've seen so far.  they cover a lot of ground, from sports news to ask-a-feminist-sex-questions to recipes to running and yoga and martial arts annnnnd... how 'bout an article about the post-baby-body that isn't just about how you can lose the baby weight?

so that is great.

and!

we have a feminist of the week today. my boss. my boss has a son who turned 4 this week. my boss was super-excitedly telling us about the celebrations he had planned. and how he had spent a night putting together the brand new, all pink, tasseled bike that his son had asked for. it has belle on it. from beauty and the beast. my boss didn't try to convince his son to pick a different bike. a red or blue or black or yellow bike. a spiderman or prince charming bike or even a beast-from-beauty-and-the-beast bike. he didn't teach his son that there was something wrong with wanting that pink belle bike. he got him that bike and it is just the best thing i've heard in ages. i maybe got just a little teary when he told us.

 {borrowed from here}

happy 40th birthday to roe v. wade. i wish i could be more chipper cheerful about your birthday. but i'm feeling pretty low about the whole chipping-away-at-you thing that is happening in the states. our not-far-away-we-look-to-them-too-often neighbour. it makes me scared and it makes me tired. here are some roe v. wade gifts:

* npr fresh air talks with carolyn jones about the process of getting an abortion in texas.

(this is very good. this fresh air piece. i mean, sure it had me crying on the subway and really wishing i had a small space i could go into and scream and scream until my voice was gone from the anger of it. but. it is a good good perspective to hear. someone who chose to abort a very much wanted baby, knowing that the baby would live a horrible painful life... her story is compelling and brutal but she is level and reasoned in her telling. and terry gross also manages to keep herself even and calm throughout the interview, which i respect because, again, all i wanted to do was scream and weep which maybe aren't the most useful things.) and, too:

* always wonderful jill has a bunch of gooood info in this piece for the guardian

* maya summerizes what is happening in mississippi with the erosion of choice

and i have a question for you lot. what do we do? how do we fight hatred and ignorance and fear? what do i do? how do i be a loud, informed voice, but also not lose my mind with anger and desperation? how do i handle the absurd hypocrisy? i want to be useful. i don't know how.

and the next day was relaxed and bright, with the flowers remaining and reminding. here we go, 28.

i was lying to me

i really thought i didn't want an ipad. i did. for reals. i thought so.

but. i was wrong.

i do.

damn.

see, with all the time i spend sitting around on style.com (let's call it a LOT of time. as an understatement.) it would be oh so lovely-handy. and. photo-editing on the go! i would love to be working on my photos during my lunch hour, but bringing my laptop to and fro work every day seems a bit excessive. especially when my laptop is so big (and beautiful...).

so. sigh. i admit defeat. i want one.

and now, cause i realized that i want one, i have have done my usual thing and immediately decided all the details of my desire. so. for you, lucky readers... here's my newest (sigh) dream.

{it would be white, of course, to match my iphone. and it would be engraved as shown. so i would feel like a blogger for reals.}

 {it would live in either the hedgehog case from kate spade ny or the monogrammed damask case from zazzle, which would have a lower case 'e' on it. although i think the kate spade is more practical, and also if it was the monogrammed one, i'd have to get a matching iphone case, and that's just getting crazy!}

woe is me! heavy sighs every-which-where! i hate wanting things. you'd think i'd be used to the feeling by now. but nay. i am not. it still hurts so. isn't my life hard?! sigh sigh cry.
