saved my life

hi i'm still alive! it is summer and life is outside and i am a bit sunburned and things are fine and good. also it is pride week!!

i wanna magic the time space continuum and be the little girl in 'fun house' back in my musical-theatre-baby days. how great is this?! a musical about a baby lesbian based on a graphic novel?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

happy monday, swaggerers, wearers of dungarees.

saved my life

it is judy garland's birthday today.
and if there is anyone who embodies the voice of melancholy, it is her. the thickness and the clarity of that tone.
with hope you burn up...
oh my heart, my heart.
happy birthday.

(and if you want a little more, do go here and let your insides swell and sink and slow dance around all day.)

happy monday, my huckleberry friends.

the broken pieces

SO WHAT IF I HAVE LISTENED TO THIS AT LEAST 32 TIMES TODAY?! YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME, MUSICALS. I CAN QUIT YOU ANYTIME I WANT! JUST CAUSE YOU'RE COMBINING MY LOVE OF MUSICALS AND MY LOVE OF TV? whatever. yes i know all of the harmony inside out. don't even worry 'bout it.

(or, but, if you must know, actually, i have been listening to the FULL version that wasn't on the show, cause then the guy sings a chorus alone so i can sing the harmony myself, duh. and probably you want to listen to it again, yeah? more? for longer? thought so.)

and, also, if you're wondering, yes, my neighbours more than likely want to kill me right about now. oooopssoooorrry.

george misses a lot, george is alone

...george looks behind. he had a gift. when did it fade?...

oh hallo there. i was just singing loudly. maybe you want to know what a person should go around singing if their heart is all hurting (and they love musicals). here's my e-sings-it-out playlist. in no particular order, cause it is best if you sing it on shuffle. try it out at home! share it with your friends! get all your sads and mads out there!

lesson no. 8 - sunday in the park with george
make them hear you - ragtime
anthem - chess
when your mind's made up - once
take the moment - do i hear a waltz
send in the clowns - a little night music
no one is alone - into the woods
how could i ever know - secret garden
funeral blues - bryce kulak
here's where i stand - camp
rose's turn - gypsy
i'm breaking down - falsettos
losing my mind - follies
just one step - songs for a new world
'till we reach that day - ragtime
someone is waiting - company
on the deck of a spanish sailing ship, 1942 - songs for a new world
they were you - the fantastics
i still believe - miss saigon
it's hard to speak my heart - parade
when? - evening primrose
someone new - scala singing (eskobar)
hold on - secret garden
bui doi - miss saigon
your daddy's son - ragtime
someone else's story - chess
i see a river - urinetown
second hand white baby grand - smash (bombshell)
there's a fine, fine line - avenue q
a way back to then - title of show
gun song/the ballad of czolgosz - assassins
the meek shall inherit - little shop of horrors
they just keep movin' the line - smash (bombshell)

and then you are probably tired, so listen to that instrumental number on ben mortimer's album

saved my life

summer weekends are proving wonderful and wonderful and wonderful! another good one.

this weekend roomie-sarah's bestie laura was in town and staying with us! i had been sooooo excited to meet her all year long. she is awesome and was such a great houseguest. i hope she can be with us again next weekend (she's going to a conference out of toronto this week). i'll bring up laura more soon, too, cause we have some plans for her and this very blog! y'all are gonna love it.

friday was slutwalk, and we'll talk more about that later. first feminist event! weeee! then sarah and i got frozen yogurt. yes. saturday was extension room, of course, with erin toop. so glad we could finally coordinate a class together! she's aces. then, of course, laura's arrival and hangouts and dinner at banjara (our favourite indian spot). sunday was a massage that ripped into my neck and shoulders in the greatest way. hurt so good! then to tiff bell lightbox for the trevor anderson's film, along with 5 other short films screened for the inside out festival. first of all. seeing bryce and max. (twice cause we ran into them at slutwalk, too...) golden. magical. fairy dust and bunnies. and a whole row of oldentimey albertans (and the odd still-albertan). god i love my city, and god i love my hometown. second. this film, guys. this film. it's stunning. bryce! trevor! it is so good. the music is funny and charming and sad and full. the dancing is sweet and sad again and clever. it is a great great film. bryce's voice just breaks my heart into a million pieces. loved it.

the other short films were great too. a few of them i really loved. one scared the crap outta me. i can't stop thinking about it. funny and scary and absurd. great! such a great way to spend a sunday afternoon. and then there was fresh for dinner. and tv and internet window-shopping and drinks and sleep. weekend win.

saved my life

i'm a-harkenin' back to a time 'ago.

this weekend's trip to vermont and back with em was a hoot! and. a nostaliga-fest. such as when (playing the 'listen-to-whatever-cd-is-pulled-from-the-bag' game) we listened right through spice girl's 'spice world'. and tori amos' 'under the pink'. it is disturbing - or possibly amazing - how we both remembered allllll the words on those albums. especially since em never listened to spice girls. it just traveled from my room to her brain, i guess.

it was a great trip, even though i was sickly like a lame-o. sisterly company and singing of musicals tend to distract from an illness better than any advil cold and sinus ever can.

family! you will be receiving your scripts for the 'hoopers-and-friends' production of 'ragtime' which we cast in the car. i think it's gonna be one hell of a show. janice, you've got some serious scenes to tackle...

and our video for the day is, of course, a reflection of my nostalgic-mind. enjoy. some spice.

thanks vermont. happy monday!

this pain in my chest

where have you been all my life gabriele colangelo?! okay. so i understand this is your first prefall collection. that makes me feel a bit better about not having known you. phew! sure, there's a few pieces that look as though they might have construction/fit issues... hard to say for sure... but on the whole? i love love mad love this collection.

i clipped more pieces from this than any other prefall, i think. i couldn't stop clipping. and i'm not going to edit it down because it flows so nicely. it really is a collection, you know? with one strong thought throughout which is gently tweaked and twisted and beautifully realized. siiiigggggghhhhhiiiinnnnnngggggg.

ghost trees! shadows! wool and fur and fuzz and shag! crispness. airiness and weightiness. whiteness! greyness. those gloves. that shade of yellow green that i am sooooo glad i can wear. (sorry all y'all with more complex complexions. it is one of my great triumphs. but my insides are hopeless and frail, so i think you probably win. don't worry.) red... (in the voice of mandy patinkin in sunday-in-the-park-with-george.) and another camille-cole-like model.
those are some of the things. that are. so. great.

dreamiverse

i've decided when i have my dream home, my dream neighbours will be:

musical theatre legends:

victor garber and mandy patinkin.

one on each side. we will sit on our porches, and sing, and maybe play games of cribbage too. it will be perfect.

(i'm watching godspell right now. with victor garber as JESUS! 70's jesus clown. how great is that? he was so cute and young! oh man. what a great flat-toothed smile! i'm a fan.)

(the country is not what it was where there's blood on the clover... assassins!)

(and dare we forget? the best part of titanic (the film) by a LOT. mr. andrews going down with his ship. all tiltey-sad-standing.)

(charles misses his ball. george misses marie. george misses a lot. george is alone... s.i.t.p.w.g.)

(muppets?!)

(and puppets?! oh. oh. heart... from a show called 'compulsion' by rinne groff which i would very much like to see.)

i could go on... oh musical theatre heart...
