saved my life (ff, fm)

we are doubling up today - saved my life and feminist monday. i planned on writing a wee bit about björk on friday, but honestly i just soaked in the new album and also the above tove lo song and had all the feels. oh the feels! you guys!! but also: so good. (reminds me a bit of medulla, which is my fave björk - intense close choral-ish harmonies that make me go ooooooof.) now on to the feminism.

{jessica hopper interviewing björk for pitchfork}

* the invisible woman: a conversation with björk

the whole interview is great, but particularly the discussion of women auteurs in music is worth reading.

happy monday, heart breakers and hearts broken.

saved my life

i have been rather harumph-y about the acapella pop groups trend for many reasons. mostly i'm a harmony/singing snob, and i'm all 'guys it is just the coolifying of choir', like, this ain't new, everybody calm down. aka i'm a no-fun meanie. also i don't have anyone to harmonize with so i'm cranky and jealous, i'll admit it. (kristel why can't you just live here in my apartment, and we won't do anything but sing, come on now.)

ANYWAYS. i'm breaking my hate-on today because i love this song very much, it gets me right in my super-cheesy-so-you-think-you-can-dancey-melodrama bits. there is a past-erin who could've used this to sing along with so so so loudly over and over way back years ago in jeanette manor. indulging that girl today.

)

happy monday, ahhhh, ooooooo.

saved my life

this weekend there was an awful lot of time spent in the car with top-40 radio for roommate-sarah and i. oh what a time! what car-dancing! i'll be throwing some pictures of the weekend and the beautifullest wedding up this week. but for now we wallow in pop music and our not so secret shame. (last night as i was getting ready for bed, i could hear the following song on repeat in roommate-sarah's room. unfortunately we can't stop.)

happy monday! it's my blorg i can post what i want to!

saved my life

it is judy garland's birthday today.
and if there is anyone who embodies the voice of melancholy, it is her. the thickness and the clarity of that tone.
with hope you burn up...
oh my heart, my heart.
happy birthday.

(and if you want a little more, do go here and let your insides swell and sink and slow dance around all day.)

happy monday, my huckleberry friends.

saved my life

it was a very j-new weekend, with me sitting on my balcony and singing for three hours on saturday to help me through a heavy-hearted spell. there was the very best rain, too, with the sunshowers and the downpours and the misteverywhere and the whited out skyline over cedarvale ravine.

'...on a good day you can see the end from here, but i won't turn back now that the way is clear, i will stay for the remainder...' and all her most wonderful poetry.

happy monday, happy week, peach plum and pear.

(OH AND. this just got posted today too. so. in a slightly different mood... squeeeeeee! yeah i wanna again oh man i wanna.)

saved my life

today i am feeling hollowed out. so tired, still, despite all the sleep. despite all the caffeine. truly. all the caffeine. black tea, energy capsules, red bull, coffee beans. and still falling asleep where i stand. not a moment of clarity or alertness. and then, not so surprisingly, the spinning headache and swirling cold sweat all up my arms. i am fed up with this body today.

this quiet desperate dance, then. i had forgotten how wonderful it was.

when other helpers fail and comforts flee...
still, always, my favourite hymn.
i just want to be able to make it to ballet tonight. please.

the broken pieces

SO WHAT IF I HAVE LISTENED TO THIS AT LEAST 32 TIMES TODAY?! YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME, MUSICALS. I CAN QUIT YOU ANYTIME I WANT! JUST CAUSE YOU'RE COMBINING MY LOVE OF MUSICALS AND MY LOVE OF TV? whatever. yes i know all of the harmony inside out. don't even worry 'bout it.

(or, but, if you must know, actually, i have been listening to the FULL version that wasn't on the show, cause then the guy sings a chorus alone so i can sing the harmony myself, duh. and probably you want to listen to it again, yeah? more? for longer? thought so.)

and, also, if you're wondering, yes, my neighbours more than likely want to kill me right about now. oooopssoooorrry.

george misses a lot, george is alone

...george looks behind. he had a gift. when did it fade?...

oh hallo there. i was just singing loudly. maybe you want to know what a person should go around singing if their heart is all hurting (and they love musicals). here's my e-sings-it-out playlist. in no particular order, cause it is best if you sing it on shuffle. try it out at home! share it with your friends! get all your sads and mads out there!

lesson no. 8 - sunday in the park with george
make them hear you - ragtime
anthem - chess
when your mind's made up - once
take the moment - do i hear a waltz
send in the clowns - a little night music
no one is alone - into the woods
how could i ever know - secret garden
funeral blues - bryce kulak
here's where i stand - camp
rose's turn - gypsy
i'm breaking down - falsettos
losing my mind - follies
just one step - songs for a new world
'till we reach that day - ragtime
someone is waiting - company
on the deck of a spanish sailing ship, 1942 - songs for a new world
they were you - the fantastics
i still believe - miss saigon
it's hard to speak my heart - parade
when? - evening primrose
someone new - scala singing (eskobar)
hold on - secret garden
bui doi - miss saigon
your daddy's son - ragtime
someone else's story - chess
i see a river - urinetown
second hand white baby grand - smash (bombshell)
there's a fine, fine line - avenue q
a way back to then - title of show
gun song/the ballad of czolgosz - assassins
the meek shall inherit - little shop of horrors
they just keep movin' the line - smash (bombshell)

and then you are probably tired, so listen to that instrumental number on ben mortimer's album
