hey!! this is some great stuff happening in my province, i'm so glad! (i don't wanna brag, but, like, a similarly great campaign happened in alberta when i was there, so, you know, my presence seems to be good for a place... you're welcome, ontario.) for real, it is bonkers how excited this shiz gets me, as if this shouldn't be STANDARD ISSUE EVERYWHERE by now. aaaannnnyway. great. kathleen wynne, yes good. thank you.

ALL OF THE LINKS!
or at least many of the links. lots and lots to read this week.

* stop blaming women for holding themselves back

* the world is listening

* the road to structural erasure is paved with well-intentioned white ladies

* these are apple's new, diverse emoji

* teen charged with raping fellow student told police he was 're-enacting' fifty shades of grey
(big time trigger warning)

ABOUT THAT LAST LINK:
50 shades of grey didn't cause this assault. but it sure as fuck didn't do anything to help dismantle the world of rape culture and the dehumanization of women. it sure as fuck didn't do anything to help women gain power and autonomy over their bodies and their lives. it sure as fuck didn't do anything to help men understand consent. if you already live in a world where you don't believe that women can or will tell you what they want (bluuuurred lines, amirite?), where you already feel you are owed things from women, 50 shades of grey is just another thing whispering (or shouting...) 'it's cool, bro. she wants it. you just gotta show her...'. 50 shades of grey didn't cause this truly heinous and horrifying assault. but it joined on in with everything else that was already cheering this asshole on, and it gave him a high-five and a douchey smile and said 'yeah, man. alright!'

* i dated christian grey

okee bye, happy friday!

you do not shoot and kill a person because you had an argument about parking. you shoot and kill a person because of hatred. racism, sexism, hatred. you kill a person because you do not respect their humanity.

{yusor mohammad, deah shaddy barakat, razan mohammad abu-salha - images from facebook by way of thenation.com}

yusor, deah and razan were shot and killed this week. and it wasn't because of an argument about parking.

saved my life (ff, fm)

we are doubling up today - saved my life and feminist monday. i planned on writing a wee bit about björk on friday, but honestly i just soaked in the new album and also the above tove lo song and had all the feels. oh the feels! you guys!! but also: so good. (reminds me a bit of medulla, which is my fave björk - intense close choral-ish harmonies that make me go ooooooof.) now on to the feminism.

{jessica hopper interviewing björk for pitchfork}

* the invisible woman: a conversation with björk

the whole interview is great, but particularly the discussion of women auteurs in music is worth reading.

happy monday, heart breakers and hearts broken.

never surprising. always disappointing.
so sayeth lissa today, and she is right on for this week's feminist friday mood.

let us begin with: fuck off, rolling stone & harper's bazaar. fuck off and fuck you. you are disgusting and pathetic.

and of course. there is the academy award nominations. you know. the whitest oscars since 1998. in the year of fullerton. or. the praise for complicated white men awards.

let's take a look at the best picture noms.

american sniper - white man is good at shooting stuff
birdman - white man is eccentric
boyhood - white boy becomes white man
the grand budapest hotel -  white man has wacky adventures
*note. it is arguable that a person of colour is the main character, or a main character. so YAY!
the imitation game - white man is good at maths and science
selma - HOLLA!!! ding ding ding! woooooooooo!
the theory of everything - white man is suuuuper good at maths and science
whiplash - white man plays music

okay, so. i'm not saying these are bad movies... i have only seen one of them, but they are almost all high on my wanna-watch list. but. BUT. omg, world. can we make movies about anyone who isn't white and male?! only one of the women nominated for best actress is in one of these films. that's bonkers. i guess they just acted real real good in absolute shit movies. good work, fancy ladies!

AND THEN. of the men nominated for best actor, four of five are from these films. and the fifth is from A MOVIE ABOUT WHITE MEN! whaaaat?! crazy. know who isn't nominated... that's right: the one person of colour leading a movie. so selma is one of the best movies, but the main character is whateves, and it must have directed itself because the WOMAN of colour who directed it got a big fat: nope!

all the best screenplay noms, both original and adapted, are men. every. single. one. cuz women writers ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

it is so remarkable it is almost laughable. almost. except not. just disappointing. and not surprising.

speaking of laughable! hahahahaha it's funny because we are left out of everything, but we're equal, no really, shit is equal, everybody stop complaining, women are like, TOTALLY TREATED EQUAL and are found in equal positions of power!!! stop loooooking for reasons to be offended, ya god damn harpies!

happy friday, harpies!

cosby is in my province. i am generally really happy to hear how many people have opted not to go to the shows, or to go and protest.

this morning i listened to a cbc news podcast while getting dressed for work, and i had to laugh a dry-mouthed, sick sad laugh, listening to a recording from last night's london ontario show in which, responding to a heckler who was calling him a rapist, cosby is heard saying 'no, no stop...'...

you know. like maybe a woman having her body assaulted might say to her attacker. like maybe any one of the 26+ women who have come forward about being assaulted by cosby.

you know.

a little on the nose. a little vomit-inducing. apparently he was talking to the audience, telling them not to respond to the heckler, and was not talking to the heckler herself. but. you know. still... those words... that context. ugh.

also there is this absolute gem:

"A few minutes earlier, a woman who got up from one of the front rows and walked past the stage was asked by Cosby where she was going.
When she answered that she was going to the lobby to grab a drink, Cosby responded with: "You have to be careful about drinking around me," which drew loud applause."

HAHAHAHA RAPE JOKES! we especially love them from people who are rapists! that's when they're the most resonant and hiiiiilarious, am i right? like: meta. or whatever.

all y'all who attended the shows for, you know, the comedy and fun: i could've sworn we were believing women now... remember? remember after ghomeshi? remember when everyone said we were believing women now? oh right, yup, but not when you have to give something up, not when you have to lose an idol, oh right, now i remember. colour me not surprised. colour me fucking tired of it.

happy friday, enjoy the jokes.

a friend texted me yesterday, while i was out running work errands, that he was crying over the sentencing in the rehtaeh parsons case.

remember her? rehtaeh. we aren't supposed to use her name. remember? remember how well reporting went for her? remember that there was a photograph of her rape, and still she was blamed and shamed and doubted and mocked? remember how cruel the world was to her? remember how she did not survive it? remember how we grieved when she died?

'why wouldn't a person report an assault?'
'we are having a watershed moment!'

i don't know what justice would look like, exactly. i don't. but i know this isn't it. i don't like prison as a catch-all. but i want something. i want something better than this. a system that rips a girl to shreds when she has already been broken apart.

the system is broken. the system is sick and rotting at its core.

'why wouldn't a person report an assault?'
'we are having a watershed moment!'

forgive me if i am not a believer. forgive me if i am too tired, even, to cry for her again. and for the ones who never got brought out into the public eye, whose assaults stayed 'community matters', who will never even come close to this non-justice-justice, to being heard and believed and cared for.

happy friday, don't forget.
