saved my life

just a waffle falling over.

i do not know why this is the funniest-best thing i've seen in ages, but it is. last night i watched it, i think, 12 times in a row. and laughed my face off every time. no one knows why. (scientists might know why... peter? dad?)

happy monday, gravity.

ff saved my life

ohhi the internets. you may have noticed there was not a feminist friday post this week. i got confused cause it was a short week after the long weekend, and blah blah, friday was all upons me like whoa.

but check it out! today is a double feature! because the following invention is basically one of the most savingest-of-my-life thing i could stumble across. and most certainly falls into the totally-awesome-for-women category. HOORAY!

* cups and straws and so on that tell you when you've been dosed with GHB.

ummmmmm hello this is the BEST THING! oh MAN aren't you so happy?! i am SO happy. it ALMOST makes me want to run to the next frat party and go craaazzeh except, no it doesn't, ewww, why would i, no.

but. really effing awesome science. yes forever.

happy monday, partyheads.

ff

what up, rape culture!? whatcha been up to lately? cool, cool.

* how's about you give this a read?

okay, jokes aside (HAHA RAPE!) this is a solid piece. all academic in nature. thanks thomas!
it is longish, but well worth the time. there are statistics and percentages, guys! NUMBERS! and, too, some very good advice. i just want to cut-and-paste it all, but i'll try to limit myself to:

something that i'm finding terrifying and shocking as i learn more and more about rape culture is how many people i actually know who have been sexually assaulted. i always thought the list was too long when i was looking at the 'society-confirmed-rapes', but now as i think back on stories i have been told over the years... there are so many i never classified correctly. never truly appreciated the extent of damage and violence. so so many. and i shudder to think about what my reactions were when i was told about these assaults. did i listen openly or did i try to excuse the acts - try to empathize with the bad guy because, you know, he was a 'nice guy'? did i build one more tiny wall against a victim classifying her assault as just that? god i hope i didn't. but i probably did. even though there was always a banging in my gut i didn't understand. all i can do is know what i know now and never ever ever put up such a wall again. let's all be that way, okay?

happy friday, my lovely internets.

ff

this week is all about gladness and achievement and overcoming and whatnot. cause. OLYMPICS!

and so this feels about right for our feminist friday reading...

* 17 year old brittany wegner is all the winningest over cancer

so that's one for young women in science and medicine.

but it's also one for TAKE THAT BREAST CANCER!!!

HAHAHAHA!

and anyways, i'm in nova scotia for the wedding of two of my very favourite humans on earth so LIFE IS SO GOOD!

(oh and also there's this...)

 {photo from here}

ruta meilutyte is probably my favourite human of the olympics so far. 15 years old. gold medal winner in the 100m breast stroke. first swimming gold ever for lithuania. boom. magics.

happy friday, y'all.

update

well it's just past two weeks into this food elimination thing, so i thought i'd give you a quick update. so far it isn't sooooo bad. i'm putting more time into cooking rather than just throwing some pasta on the stove. which is good. for my brain as well as my body. i forget how satisfying cooking something real can be.

i'm eating kale like a monster. oh man i cannot get enough of the stuff! kale in everything! kale forever!

generally, although it is early to say, i am feeling good in the stomachs. i find i feel like i'm hungrier, which i think has to do with feeling less disgustingly bloated-mc-pain-doubledover. so that is great!

the one thing that is killing me is dessert. dessert is haaaaarrrd to come up with, and i am missing the sugar-taste pretty much ALL THE TIME! all i can think about for probably about 82% of my waking hours is doughnuts.

{you can make these for yourself because you are not me. recipe here.}

ooooooof. when i am done this thing, and allowed to re-introduce, i will be on the doughnuts so fast. so i guess that means my first re-introductions will be gluten and sugar. i get 2 every 2 weeks, so hooooooray!

i'm sorry. for the next 6 weeks

 {this woman is on a cleanse. i will not be happy and in a field and cleansing like this woman.}

DISCLAIMER POINT TIMES A MILLION! THIS IS NOT A CLEANSE! THIS IS NOT A DIET! IF YOU CALL IT A CLEANSE OR A DIET I WILL LOSE MY MIND ALL UPONS YOU. YOU HAVE BEEN SO WARNED.

starting today i will not be eating a whole pile of things that i love eating. because a naturopath told me not to. because my body is all 'uuuuh, we don't know about these things. these things make us feel like bleeeeehhhhhhhh'. (my body is not very articulate.)

i am super excited about this and also very very not excited. for one thing, i will be one of 'those' people who can't eat a lot of stuff, and therefore can't eat at a lot of restaurants, friends' houses, so on. i will be difficult. and i hate that. also, i'm not so much with the super-strength will power. and i LOOOVVVEEE food and drink. and i hate to be so limited in what i can consume.

but. then again. i have been so doubled over so many times with mysterious mystery pain from eating and drinking. and if i can live life without having to leave parties and dinner tables to cry in the bathroom... well. it'll all be worth it. for sure. it'll be good to know that not being in pain is as simple as not eating such-and-such thing. i have to go full-tilt for six weeks. no cheats. and then i can re-introduce slowly, one or two items at a time. and see if it was a temporary negative reaction my body was having (over-consumption of the same things can apparently cause this) or a full-forever reaction. me and my body. trying to talk to each other.

but i'll say one more time, sans caplocks just to be nice. this isn't a diet and it isn't a cleanse. i'm not doing this to 'detox my system' or flush out water-weight or blah blah gross-dumb. i HATE cleanses and diets. this is not a vanity project. this is me trying to not poison myself anymore. this isn't some run of the mill list of thangs. this is a specific list. that my body chose. to eliminate. if i were allergic to bees, and decided to stop getting stung by bees for a while to see if i felt better, no one would say 'oh, you're doing one of those bee-free facial skin rejuvenation plans? my aunt did that!' because people would know that not getting stung by bees when you have a bad reaction to bee stings that is slowly killing you is a GOOD idea for your health. BLAH BLAH I HATE CLEANSES!

anyways! hoping you'll be super supportive of me, and accept my pre-apology for being difficult and probably pretty whiny. here's what i can't eat!!!

fruits: banana, cantaloupe, mango, strawberry, pineapple, watermelon, avacado,

veg: carrots, cabbage, corn, mushroom, eggplant, pepper (green & red),

dairy: cowmilk, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, 'american' cheese (ha! what?!), whey (cowmilk),

grains etc: buckwheat, malt (barley), gluten, gliaden, oat, rye, yeast (brewers), wheat bran, wheat (whole), navy bean, dill, hops, peanut, poppyseed,

fish/meat: clam, crab, lobster, shrimp, ham,

fun things: milk chocolate, MSG, superheated veg fat (deep frying), sugar (white & brown), beer, coke, wine (red & white)

 {goodbye, sweetest friends}

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! here goes. i realize that i've already messed up, cause i forgot oats were on the list and had oatmeal for breakfast. damn it! ugh. this is gonna be a hard time!

earth 2, two (this time it's earthier)

remember earth 2? of course you do. it was the greatest.

(it wasn't. actually. in hindsight. but. for grade 4 me, it was. so great. oh MAN!)

if i were to remake earth 2, i would costume it like this missoni. the shades of tan and brown. the animal skins and fur and leather and knits which say cowboy and pioneer but also sultry future dystopian glamour. stone and dust and drying moss... the slight twists on current dress which read so very 'not-too-distant-future' that is such a trend in science-fiction, aka the belts worn not on the waist, but just a bit too high. (example, the reverse racerback uniforms of battlestar galactica. brilliant.) one earring. that hair. my earth 2 would be darker in content than the original. more bleak... but there would be that warm white dirty light, like in firefly/serenity... actually. this collection would work pretty well for firefly/serenity too. come to think of it.

i love science-fiction. get over it!

also that sharp blue! sort of cerulean. watery. there would probably be a whole tribe of earth 2 dwellers who dressed completely in that. pow!

(i was going to comment, too, on those great wrap-shrugs which are reminiscent of ballet shrugs, except that you  can't lift your arms in them, and how much i adore them. but i got carried away with the earth 2 thing... so. there's that. too.)

ff

time to take a break from fashion!

remember, it is important to keep a thoughtful head on those well-dressed shoulders.

and so back to life, back to reality, back to feminist friday and readings for all!!! and this week... we have teasers! snapshots from each article. check this out:

and then...

{links are, of course, below. but i don't want to go and NOT give any credits here,
so i'll say right away that the top quote is by agustin fuentes, and the bottom is by dov linzer}

i am quite excited about today's articles. first up. SCIENCE! this article is for dad. hey dad! you LOVE scientific american, right?

i, too, am a fan of science. (like bill nighy says, the great thing about science is that it is true!)

and so, this is also for all the morons (sorry friends) who say to me "but what about (blah blah blah) in 'men are from mars, women are from venus'?!" as a relevant counterpoint to anything i have to say (or link to) on gender-essentialism and its lame-o lameness! a) that's possibly the worst book ever in the history of time (maybe) and is anti-partnership, anti-cooperation, and encourages the out-witting of one's romantic partners, which is boooo... and b)

* BLAMO! SCIENCE, MOTHA-SWEARWORD!

sorry. sorry. i just get so excited about science.

and then. something about (shock!) sexism in other worlds than my own! because focusing on change in my little part of the world is super important to me, but there is so much more to this feminist movement than that. oh yes. of course. so.

* woe to the girl...

and there you have it. thanks for reading! (you better be...)

back to pre-fall posts!

happy friday!
