for the love of mo

{moustache types borrowed from here}

it is november, and you know that means that men everywhere will be puttin' some hair on their lips for a good cause. now i can't grow a moustache (neither can my brother but we'll come back to that...) so i am instead participating in the following event to show my support:

* extension room's MOVEMBER CHALLENGE!!!

sunday november 18th, i will be dragging any and every male i can find to dance-jump-workout their way to health both for themselves and for others. and you get cocktails after?! FOR A GREAT CAUSE??!! pretty please check it out and join me. i double dog dare you!! (you wouldn't pass on a double dog dare, would you? that would be SUPER lame.)

but if you aren't in toronto, or are a big fraidey-cat, you can always help the cause in another way. the above-mentioned brother is raising money and growing a tragedy-stash for the cause. last year his first born came into the world to that sad sad moustache, and it is only right that my nephew-declan celebrates his first birthday with an equally terrifying-faced dad. (sorry chris. but. really. you're just not made for facial-hair-growing...)

* you can donate to chris' valiant efforts here!

happy movember, everyone. may the moustache wax be with you. note i have intentionally spelled moustache wrong throughout, to encourage a more entertaining pronunciation. yeah? yeah. good.

saved my life.

david rakoff.

this week's 'this american life' is entirely him. in his memory.

take a listen. it is a wonderful thing. he was a wonderful thing. he was canadian! it is so sad to have lost him.

he talks about the facade. the ability to joke. to cover a deep melancholy and loneliness. wit. and so much more. he was an amazing storyteller. and he burns RENT. which. is exactly what everyone should do. haha! amazing!

and his performance at this year's TAL live was my very favourite thing. i cried when i first saw it. and then cried again, harder, when it was replayed on the podcast. here it is. it is a type of magic i can't begin to explain.

thank you, david, for everything.

happy monday friends.

this week is all about gladness and achievement and overcoming and whatnot. cause. OLYMPICS!

and so this feels about right for our feminist friday reading...

* 17 year old brittany wegner is all the winningest over cancer

so that's one for young women in science and medicine.

but it's also one for TAKE THAT BREAST CANCER!!!

HAHAHAHA!

and anyways, i'm in nova scotia for the wedding of two of my very favourite humans on earth so LIFE IS SO GOOD!

(oh and also there's this...)

 {photo from here}

ruta meilutyte is probably my favourite human of the olympics so far. 15 years old. gold medal winner in the 100m breast stroke. first swimming gold ever for lithuania. boom. magics.

happy friday, y'all.
