ff

i don't know if coming back this week is a good idea. cause i am cranky, yo. about all the things, but mostly about the reactions to the oscars where everyone everywhere threw up their arms and screamed SEXISM in unison. i've been doing a lot of heavy sighing and head shaking, so i thought i should talk about it. and try my best to be coherent and not rambley.

everyone hold on to your hats. cause i'm annoyed with the feminists.

WHAT!?!

i know, right? a first for everything.

there's been a lot of people getting their arms up but not actually having watched. to which i say 'CONTEXT, guys!'. because some of those terrible jokes, i didn't think were all that terrible in context.*

such as. the george-clooney-and-a-9-year-old joke. was it in bad taste? yeah. probs. but was it at the 9 year old's expense? no. it was at george clooney's expense. it was a joke which said 'hey folks! know who's a creeper on the younger ladies? that clooney dude! total creeper, am i right?!' he didn't say 'she is gonna be sleepin with clooney, the tiny slut'. THAT would be crass as hell and not cool beans at ALL. but the joke which was actually made? not that bad.

and then. the boobs song. and this one truly surprised me. the reaction. GUUUYS! (like i may have ranted a bit on facebook) THIS JOKE WAS MAKING FUN OF MEN! not women. the whole point was that seth is a big dumdum who still has a 13 year old's reaction to booooobies. it was mocking the pathetic-ness of that kind of man. i am not crazy to think this, am i? roommate-sarah agrees with me! it is a multi-layer affair where SURE the surface is that women have boobies and that's why we look at them, but then under that is the 'this is an absurd and awful state of affairs, and good lord a guy who sings about boobs is a total jerk.' NOT TO MENTION that the joke was nestled inside another joke that we are looking back on the song from the future, and with foresight we are saying 'that is terrible, seth! you'd be a moron to do THAT at the oscars!' and HAHA there it is again! we're mocking SETH. yes? no? am i not explaining it well? probably not. but i stand by it.

(also, i very much appreciate a point made in this toronto standard piece that, while we are all ENRAGED by mr mcfarlane's words, we are also tweeting about how ugly-dumb anne hathaways nipples were, and didn't so and so look fat and so and so is too skinny...)

i do think that the penelope-cruise-is-hot-but-bad-at-english joke was kinda shitty (although not towards women so much, as javier bardem was on the list). and samesies with the domestic-abuse-ha-ha rihanna joke. i totally have your back on those, the internets.

but. in general. this outcry isn't good for us! if we scream at all the jokes, and don't take the time to engage with them and analyze them then we really are playing into the hands of those who say that feminists are humorless. and then when we get mad about things that are grosssss or  TRULY terrible in comedy and tv and pop culture, we get a headshake and a those-damned-cranky-feminists are at it again. and there will always be people who hate all feminists all the time, but there are also people who are teetering between ally and not, and there are so many issues where we could use their help. use their hearts and heads.

anyways. i enjoyed the oscars. for the most part. i liked the singing and the dancing. i liked that it was a bit paired down. i didn't care for mcfarlane before the oscars, but i liked him well enough by the end. (he does have a really lovely singing voice...) i expected to hate him and i didn't. and i'd rather watch a dozen mcfarlane-hosted events than one more ricky gervais anything... but most of all i just want tina fey and amy poehler to host everything ever. soooo... them's my two cents! byeeee.

*OH YAY! after i wrote all this, i finally found a piece that seems to get it. yes?
referring to the bit about looking back from the future on seth's performance: "That moment nicely shifted our focus from the material to the performer, lending everything he said a meta veneer." YES! "...misdirecting our discomfort and outrage..." oh phew. i'm not alone and crazy. phew, phew.

happy friday, boobs.
